Broncos Beat Commanders in OT 27-26

The Commanders won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd half.

Bo Nix and the Broncos offense started with the ball at their own 27 yard line. RJ Harvey gained 10 yards on his first carry of the game and the Broncos got their 1st first down of the game quickly. Nix hit Adam Trautman for 13 yards to get the Broncos into Washington territory. On 3rd and 10, Bo hit Tyler Badie over the middle and he squared his shoulders and got the 1st down. Troy Franklin hauled in a 17 yard reception and the Broncos were right on the outside of the Red Zone. The drive stalled unfortunately and the Broncos were settled for a 33 yard field goal. Broncos early lead 3-0 with 10:28 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Commanders started their 1st drive of the night at their own 23 yard line. On 3rd and 3, Mariota found Deebo for a short gain and moved the chains. Chris Rodriguez got the next 1st down on a 12 yard run. On 3rd and 8, Mariota loaded up a deep pass to Jaylin Lane but Riley Moss had terrific coverage and broke up the pass. Washington punted it back to Denver who would start their next drive at their 11 yard line with 4:36 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Facing a 3rd and 9, Nix hit Badie for a 5 yard gain and the Broncos would go quickly 3 and out. Commanders started their next drive from their own 42 yard line with 2:57 remaining in the 1st.

Chris Rodriguez burst through the line for a 9 yard gain to get the drive going and Washington got just into Denver territory. Marcus Mariota took it himself for a 1st down. Zach Ertz got another 1st down on a 12 yard reception. Hufanga got his 2nd TFL, this time on Rodriguez for -2. On 3rd and 12, Jeremy McNichols took a handoff for 16 yards to keep the drive alive. At the start of the 2nd quarter, Commanders were now at the Broncos 23 yard line. Two plays later, Mariota looked like he was trying to throw it away and ended it up throwing it right to Dre Greenlaw who returned it to the Broncos 34 yard line.

Broncos moved the ball into Washington territory and on 4th and 1, Bo Nix play faked and through the ball to Adam Trautman who took it up with left sideline for 21 yards. On 3rd and 8 from the WSH 10, Nix was lucky to get rid of it and not take a sack. Was also hit helmet to helmet but no call. Wil Lutz converted a 28 yard FG and the Broncos extended their lead 6-0 with 7:51 remaining in the 1st half.

On 3rd and 12, Marcus Mariota gained a 1st down into Denver territory as the defense lost contain. Mariota hit McLaurin on a slant and he worked it down to the Broncos 10 yard line. Zach Allen seemed to have the 1st sack of the game but the refs missed Laremy Tunsil's shove and instead called a penalty on Nik Bonitto and on the next play, Chris Rodriguez ran it in from 8 yards out to give Washington their first lead of the game 7-6 with 2:21 remaining in the 1st half.

Starting from their own 36 yard line, Nix hit Harvey for a 7 yard gain as we hit the 2 min warning. Nix started to get Evan Engram and Courtland Sutton involved and the Broncos worked inside the 10 yard line. On 2nd down from the 11 yard line, Bo Nix climbed the pocket and hit Sutton in the front of the end zone for a Broncos TD! Broncos went back in front 13-7 with 23 seconds remaining in the 1st half.

Mariota kneeled out the final possession to send us to halftime.

Washington started the 2nd half from their own 28 yard line. Zach Ertz caught a 14 yard pass to get Washington out to midfield and then a 12 yard reception to get into Denver territory. Marcus Mariota then gained 19 yards to get the Commanders down to the 17 yard line. Terry McLaurin caught a pass over the middle to get WSH down to the 5 yard line and on 3rd and goal, Treylon Burks made a spectacular one-handed catch for a touchdown to put Washington back in front 14-13 with 9:58 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Broncos offense started from their own 28 yard line. On 3rd and 8, Bo Nix scrambled for 11 yards to move the chains. Mims gains 9 yards on a run around the left side. A holding call against Pat Bryant backed the Broncos up to a 3rd and 11 but Nix was able to find a wide open Courtland Sutton down the left sideline for 32 yards. A few plays later, Nix hit Bryant over the middle for 20. Two plays later, RJ Harvey punched it in from 1 yard out to give the Broncos back the lead 20-14 with 3:59 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Terry McLaurin got the Commanders their first 1st down of the drive with a 14 yard catch over the middle. On 3rd and 9, Mariota's deep pass attempt fell incomplete and the Broncos would start their next drive from their own 14 yard line after the punt in the waning seconds of the 3rd quarter.

On 2nd and 9, Bo Nix rolled right and hit Pat Bryant for 15 yards to get the offense to the 31 yard line as the 3rd quarter wound down. On 3rd and 8, Bo Nix tried to hit Pat Bryant over the middle and threw it right to Bobby Wagner who returned it to the Denver 36 yard line. After an initial first down to the Denver 22 yard line, the Washington drive stalled. Jake Moody converted a 38 yard field goal to pull within 3, 20-17 with 12:37 remaining in the game.

Broncos start from their own 29 yard line and on 3rd and 3, Bo Nix was sacked by Frankie Luvu and Denver quickly went 3 and out, punting it back to Washington who would start their drive from their own 27 yard line with 10:12 remaining in the 4th quarter.

The Broncos defense forced a quick 3 and out and the offense got the ball back at their own 20 yard line after the punt with 8:42 remaining in the 4th.

Broncos offense was able to work the ball into Washington territory but the drive stalled at the 47. A beautiful punt by Crawshaw should've been downed at the 1 yard line but Lil'Jordan Humphrey's foot was on the line and it was ruled a touchback.

Starting from their own 20, with 4:42 Mariota hit McLaurin for a 15 yard gain to get the drive out to the 35 yard line. Dondrea Tillman got a huge sack on Mariota and then on 3rd and 21, Alex Singleton got a massive PBU on Zach Ertz to force a punt! Broncos got the ball back at their 29 yard line.

Broncos couldn't get a crucial 1st down and punted it back to Washington who would start their drive at their own 14 yard line with 3 minutes remaining in the game. Mariota scrambled for 11 to get an initial 1st down. On 3rd and 10 from their own 26, Zach Ertz caught a 9 yard pass and then McNichols converted the 4th and 1 to the 38 yard line at the 2 minute warning. After the timeout, Ertz caught a 16 yard pass to get Commanders into Denver territory. Marcus Mariota was called for intentional grounding on 1st down. Facing 2nd and 25, Riley Moss had a great PBU but McLaurin came up with a 19 yard catch on 3rd down and then Ertz 8 yard catch on 4th and 6. Washington marched all the way down Denver 27 yard line. Facing a 3rd and 3 with 23 seconds left. Mariota scrambled to the 14 yard line and got out of bounds. Eventually, the Commanders would line up for a game tying 32 yard field goal to send the game to OT.

Broncos lost the coin toss and the Commanders elected to kick it away. Denver's offense started their first drive of OT at their own 24 yard line. Bo Nix hit RJ Harvey for the checkdown and he ran it up field for 11 yards and the first 1st down of the drive. Trautman got another first down to the Denver 48 yard line. Nix found Evan Engram over the middle for a huge 42 yard gain and then a couple plays later, RJ Harvey walked into the end zone for a 5 yard touchdown! Broncos take the lead 27-20 with 6:59 remaining in OT.

Mariota hit McLaurin for 20 yards and quickly got into Denver territory at their 45. The game looked like it was over on a game ending INT by Brandon Jones but DPI was called on Hufanga and kept the drive alive. On the next play, Mariota hit Deebo Samuel down the right sideline all the way down to the 1 yard line. Broncos defense forced it into a 4th down and goal opportunity and Mariota hit McLaurin for a 3 yard TD. On the 2 point conversion, Nik Bonitto batted it away and the Broncos won 27-26!
