A Call To Journalism

I cover sports for a living.

Sports, as I like to say from time to time, is our stupid.

Nonetheless, it's a job I take seriously and a responsibility I do not take lightly.

Today, a senior White House official took a notable stab at my colleagues in the media.

And let me be very clear, we're all one and the same. People who cover politics, sports, news of famine and triumph, news of popular culture and science.

All of us are united.

We are credentialed and we are emboldened by our responsibility to present facts, even if those facts don't represent the views of everyone.

Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s chief White House strategist, said today, "The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for awhile."

Mr. Bannon went on to say, "The media here is the opposition party," while calling journalists “Among the most dishonest people on earth."

On behalf of all those credentialed, educated and reliable journalists who believe in the integrity in our profession and our core values, we are now under siege. I stand for the work we do and the careers we've chosen.

I stand with each and every one of us.

I, for one, do not plan on shutting my mouth.

What I cover may be stupid, but I take it seriously, I do it with integrity.

I ask my colleagues to do the same and expect them to be accountable to their words.

We are not the opposition party. We are journalists.
