I don't have the time right before I go on the air this morning to debate whether this is the greatest streak in college basketball.
I'll leave that discussion for fans, boosters, detractors, etc.
And I won't challenge the notion or even the statement that UConn's women's basketball team has feasted on a plethora of mediocrity in the sport.
If that's your contention, with not really watching a lot of games, then it seems ludicrous for me to attempt to changing your mind.
But let's look at numbers, because facts matter.
Last night, UConn defeated South Carolina 66-55 for the program's 100th consecutive victory.
That's 100. In a row.
They haven't lost a game in 819 days. They've now won 147 out of 148 games. They haven't lost at home in 1,434 days (March 13, 2013) and it's been 1,822 days (February 19, 2012) since their last home loss against a team not in the top 5.
Nine of these victories by 60 or more points.
Only two of them have been single-digit wins.
From 2008-2010, the same UConn women's team had won 90 straight games.
Is this the greatest college basketball program ever?
I don't know. Ask UCLA and about their men's basketball teams which compiled an 88-game win streak which ended in 1974.
I will say this to you. It cannot be underscored how important the achievement is, and it cannot possibly be ignored.
You may think little of women's college basketball. I'm not going to sway your opinion on that topic one way or another.
But facts are facts, and 100 games in a row is a really remarkable achievement.
