Some things we'll be talking about this morning on another edition of FIRST SPORTS....
* Paulie Malignaggi, a one-time champion boxer and doing his job as a pitchman for the upcoming Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. clash on August 26, continued to "sell" the fight by tearing into the UFC champion. While I continue to maintain this fight is and will be a sham, I will give the people in charge of marketing the fight some degree of credit if they can snag some more pay-per-view buys and a few more ticket sales.
* UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen made some comments this week regarding academic standards for college football players and how unrealistic it is to expect football players to maintain both a full-time academic schedule as well as a football schedule. You'll forgive me if I don't shed a tear for this guy. And while we're at it, you know who really has a right to whine, complain and bitch about what's expected of the college football player? Ask any number of the athletes who happened to maintain a rigorous academic schedule, a football schedule and then give up on their professional football goals in order to serve our country while attending our service academies.Rosen - once again - showed us all precisely why he should never be allowed to speak publicly about anything.
* Barry Bonds admitted this week that he regretted leaving behind his MLB career, hinting that he was forced out of the game and that he could likely have pushed for a career total of 800 homeruns.I too, regret leaving behind one of my many earlier careers. Because I'm pretty certain at the age of 17 I was about to perfect the right blend of frozen yogurt flavor combinations at "Bananas Over Yogurt" in a strip mall in Monrovia, California. I'm pretty bummed about that... still.
We've got more NFL preseason previews to get to this morning. We'll be talking some New England Patriots football later today. And we'll also preview the PGA Championship, which begins tomorrow, kicking off the 4th and final major tournament on the PGA Tour calendar. All of that and more, this morning, 9am ET on FOX AM1340/93.9FM and on the I Heart Radio app at foxsports1340.com
