San Diego Chargers v Denver Broncos

It might not have been pretty, but style points will clearly have their time and place.

The Denver Broncos opened the 2017 season last night with a 24-21 victory at home against one of their most heated division rivals in the Los Angeles Chargers.

Trevor Siemian tossed a pair of touchdowns to Bennie Fowler and also scampered into the end zone for a rushing touchdown of his own as the Broncos opened up a commanding 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Two quick scoring strikes midway through the fourth quarter from Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers put Los Angeles in a position to tie the game in the closing seconds. (See the attempt at the 7:40 mark of the video below).

The win means the Broncos join both the Chiefs and Raiders atop the AFC West standings after week one, with Denver set to face the Dallas Cowboys this weekend. The Chargers will make their official debut in the Stub Hub Center this weekend against the Miami Dolphins, who will be playing for the first time since their fourth preseason game on August 31.

Minnesota Vikings v New Orleans Saints

It was a big night for quarterback Sam Bradford and the Minnesota Vikings, who overwhelmed the visiting New Orleans Saints on their way to a 29-19 victory in the first game of the MNF doubleheader.

In just his second season with the Vikings, quarterback Sam Bradford was on target most of the night, throwing for more than 340 yards and three touchdowns. Rookie running back Dalvin Cook also had a big night, rushing for 127 yards on 22 carries. Meantime, it was a rough night for former Viking running back Adrian Peterson. Making his debut for the Saints, Peterson carried the ball only 6 times for 18 yards.

Not sure what to make of Peterson's "effort", or lack thereof. But if last night's little staring contest in the first half between the running back and Saints head coach Sean Payton is any indication, this relationship will not end well in "The Big Easy".

The Vikings get their first road test of the season this Sunday at the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the Saints will host the New England Patriots in what should be an interesting contest between two teams coming off stinging losses.

Cue the music on this one!

Now to be fair, this wasn't a resume-building moment for ESPN sideline reporter's Sergio Dipp.

But I'll send him a shout-out for going out there and doing his job, and for not being embarrassed about living his dream.

Hours after this not-so shining moment on the mothership during the second game of the Monday Night doubleheader, Dipp did go on Twitter, posting a video to acknowledge what the moment meant to him, as a Mexican-American who has worked for the network for nearly 4 years.

“Growing up in the American environment as a minority, a minority like head coaches Vance Joseph and Anthony Lynn. So what I wanted to do was show some respect, making my debut as a minority on American national TV, the biggest show out there, on the most heartfelt day in this great country made up by immigrants and [from] some people’s perspective, it all went wrong. But I truly meant no disrespect. Because all I wanted to do was to show some love to these two historical head coaches. Hopefully I’ll have another chance and be sure I make the most out of it.”

Yeah, it's a funny moment. And yes, we're going to mock this mercilessly. But let's not make it more than what it is.

Meantime, the reaction to the Beth Mowins/Rex Ryan play-by-play team is a whole other story, because clearly from the reaction I saw on social media last night, many of you are not comfortable with a woman calling your NFL action.

We'll have all this and more, including the latest on the quarterback turmoil in Houston as the Texans prepare for a Thursday night game at Cincinnati. We'll chat with Patrick Starr, covering the Texans at scout.com about that story.

We'll also get you caught up on offseason NBA news with Jamieson Welsh.

All this and more on FIRST SPORTS, coming up at 9am ET on the I Heart Radio app and locally on the radio dial at AM1340/93.9FM.
