2019 SunRay Live Racing Season Opening May 3

The 2019 live racing season at SunRay Park and Casino begins on Friday, May 3, offering a daily purse structure expected to exceed $200,000.

The track will be running a boutique meet this season, consisting of 17 days of live racing, campaigning primarily on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This year’s unique meet will be presented through Sunday, June 2.

Post times on Fridays and Mondays are 3 p.m. (MST), with post times on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 1:15 p.m.

The popular, “Freaky Fast Fridays” consists of all Quarter Horse cards. Saturdays and Sundays offer both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse action. Consecutive Monday cards on May 6 and May 13, will serve up all Thoroughbred programs.

A pair of $50,000 stake races will set the tone for the new season, with the Animas Stakes opening up Quarter Horse festivities on Friday, May 3, followed on Saturday, May 4, by the 6½ furlong Inaugural Handicap in addition to all the live simulcasting of the Kentucky Derby program from Churchill Downs. The $60,000 Foutz Distaff, also at six and one-half furlongs, completes opening weekend, highlighting Sunday’s card on May 5.

World class two-year-old Quarter Horses will again be on display in the $100,000 estimated New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity and the $100,000 estimated Four Corners Futurity, both set to be contested on Sunday, June 2.

On the Thoroughbred side, this year’s increases in stake purses will certainly generate interest in such events as the $60,000 Jack Cole handicap at one mile on Monday, May 13, the $60,000 Dine Stakes at six and one-half furlongs on Sunday, May 26 and the $75,000 San Juan County Commissioners’ Handicap at one and one-eighth miles on closing Sunday, June 2.

2019 will see SunRay Park again present it’s “Guest Paddock Host” program. Consisting of racing industry analysts from across the nation, the “Guest Paddock Host” program attempts to provide a myriad of handicapping angles and information, beneficial to both the on and off track patron.

New at SunRay this meet will be the unveiling of an infield video tote board. The DAKTRONICS constructed board will function as a multi-purpose vehicle for displaying odds, results, real time live race video and other race related information. Its incorporation ensures that SunRay Park remains committed to providing fans with the best racing and entertainment presentation in the Four Corners area.

Each year, SunRay Park and Casino presents top flight Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing action.
