A field of ten quarter horses will face the starter in the $50,000 Animas Stakes, Friday's featured event on the opening day program at SunRay Park and Casino.
Headlined by morning line favorite Sure Fire Quick, the Animas will be run at a distance of 400 yards and has a scheduled post time of 6:12 p.m. local time.
Trained by Jesus Carrete for owners Ricardo Bernal and Reymundo Resendez, Sure Fire Quick hasn't raced since a third place finish last October in the Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park. The 2-time winner from seven career starts has earned both his career wins at this 400-yard distance, including his most recent score when winning his trial heat for the Hobbs America Futurity.
The Texas-bred son of Walk Thru Fire has been installed as the 5-to-2 morning line choice and will break from post 5 under jockey Alonso Rivera.
The main rivals to Sure Fire Quick appear to be 5-time winner Unrestrained, coming off a stakes win at Turf Paradise in Phoenix last time out and a winner of four straight races in both Arizona and California.
Unrestrained is trained by Jesus Olivas for owner Cristina Salas. The California-bred son of Kiddy Up will be ridden by Emilio Tapia and will break from the 7 post as the 7-to-2 second choice on the morning line.
Offering some value on the morning line will be Fast Gold Prize, trained by Cynthia Gonzalez and looking for her third win from her last five starts.
The Texas-bred daughter of Hez Our Secret has been no worse than second in each of her last four starts and retains the services of jockey Jaime Leos. She will break from the 2 hole and has been listed at 10-to-1 on the morning line.
First post time for the opening day program is 3 p.m.
