San Juan College has received a grant from the New Mexico Public Education Department to support innovative work to recruit and support highly promising Native American teaching candidates. People who participate in “Project ALPINE” will receive scholarship funding for a career in education. Alexis Domme, director of teacher education at San Juan College, was in studio to discuss the grant and its benefits for those looking to enter or re-enter the education field. She discussed how the grant is helping those who are transitioning from one field to another as well as the need for locally based educators in Native American communities. We discussed how important teachers and counselors are to local and regional youth who may need structure outside the home.
